EU Blesses Universal-BMG Marriage

Law360, New York (May 22, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Europe’s competition watchdog on Tuesday gave conditional approval to Universal Music Group’s $2.1 billion bid to buy BMG Music Publishing, Bertelsmann AG's music publishing arm, quelling concerns that the union could put a damper on competition in the industry by requiring Universal to divest several publishing rights.

The European Commission had been probing the deal since December 2006 after an initial market investigation indicated that the merger could have adverse effects on competition in the European Union’s already-concentrated music publishing market.
