Law360, New York (June 30, 2011, 7:10 PM ET) -- Former Massachusetts House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi on Wednesday sought a new trial or the toss of his conviction of accepting bribes to help two software companies score multimillion-dollar contracts with the state, saying the court allowed hearsay into evidence.
“The government virtually conceded in its closing argument that it had no direct evidence against Mr. DiMasi, and relied instead on inferences in seeking verdicts of guilt,” DiMasi's motion said. “Those inferences were unreasonable, illogical, speculative and piled one atop another to arrive at the verdicts...
