NY Requires Life Insurers To Check Death Database

Law360, New York (July 05, 2011, 2:14 PM ET) -- New York's insurance regulators said Tuesday they had directed all life insurers in the state to check data available in the U.S. Social Security Administration's death database to make sure they were paying owed death benefits.

The New York Insurance Department issued 172 letters to life insurance companies, seeking reports on how effectively the insurers use available information to identify claims that should be paid. Insurers are legally required to respond to the letters, according to the department.
