House Committee Passes Bill Aimed At Frivolous Suits

Law360, New York (July 08, 2011, 6:25 PM ET) -- The GOP-led House Judiciary Committee on Thursday passed tort reform legislation that aims to reduce frivolous lawsuits through mandatory sanctions and financial penalties for civil procedure violations.

The bill, the Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act, cleared the U.S. House committee 20-13. If passed into law, it would undue the changes to civil procedure instituted in 1993 that gave leeway to judges in deciding sanctions and penalties.
