Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) often involve claims of defamation, tortious interference with contract, and the like. They are brought not so much to be successful on the merits as to create a chilling effect on criticism of government or businesses due to the high costs of defending these suits. Texas has now joined a slim majority of states with anti-SLAPP laws designed to allow defendants to get cases like this dismissed early, thus limiting fees and costs....
