Occidental Must Cover $4B River Cleanup, Judge Says

Law360, New York (July 26, 2011, 7:31 PM EDT) -- A New Jersey judge ruled last week that Occidental Chemical Corp. was liable for as much as $4 billion in costs related to the cleanup of highly toxic chemical pollution in the lower Passaic River.

Judge Sebastian Lombardi of the Essex County Superior Court found July 19 that Occidental was strictly, jointly and severally liable under state law for all past and future costs New Jersey incurred or will incur cleaning up discharges from a manufacturing plant the company acquired.
