Navajo Nation, Utilities End Coal Lease Suit For $65M

Law360, New York (August 22, 2011, 9:15 PM ET) -- Peabody Energy Inc., Southern California Edison Co. and an Arizona utility have reached a $65 million settlement with the Navajo Nation in a 12-year-old suit in Washington federal court over coal mining royalties, an attorney for the tribe said Monday.

The Navajo Nation has already received a one-time payment of $50 million, and Peabody will be providing $15 million in services, goods and financing over the next 10 years for infrastructure to benefit Navajo communities nearest to the Black Mesa Mine Complex, according to Samuel J....
