HP Settles Blu-Ray Disc False Marking Suit

Law360, New York (September 1, 2011, 6:17 PM EDT) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. on Wednesday reached a confidential settlement in Texas with Main Hastings LLC in a qui tam suit accusing HP of marking expired patents on Blu-ray disc players.

Main Hastings — a frequent filer of such actions against major companies like Boeing Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. — claimed that Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP's false marking had blocked competitors from making rival products and harmed the plaintiff, the U.S. and the public.
