DOE Fines Contractor Over Nuke Site Demolition

Law360, New York (September 2, 2011, 5:59 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Energy said Thursday it was seeking more than $400,000 in civil penalties from engineering contractor Washington Group International Inc. for allegedly violating nuclear safety regulations during demolition of a building on a New York nuclear research campus.

The DOE accused WGI of failing to detect and properly respond to radiological contamination during an open air demolition of a building at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna, N.Y., last fall, exposing workers and others in the area to radioactive contamination.
