FDA Blasts Hair Care Co. For ‘Formaldehyde-Free’ Ads

Law360, New York (September 8, 2011, 5:26 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed Wednesday that it had rebuked GIB LLC for advertising its popular Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution as formaldehyde-free even though the hair straightening treatment contained high levels of the carcinogen.

GIB already faces at least one consumer class action over its formaldehyde-free claims, while the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and state agencies in Oregon, California and Connecticut have alerted hair salon owners and workers about potential formaldehyde exposure from Brazilian Blowout products....
