US Dolphin-Safe Tuna Labeling Rules Too Restrictive: WTO

Law360, New York (September 15, 2011, 5:26 PM EDT) -- A World Trade Organization panel ruled Thursday that U.S. dolphin-safe tuna labeling rules do not discriminate against products from Mexico, but concluded the measures restricted trade too much.

The dispute resolution panel upheld the legitimacy of U.S. efforts to discourage the sale of tuna caught with fishing techniques that endanger dolphins and rejected Mexico's claims that its tuna was being unfairly singled out for exclusion from the U.S. market.
