Apple Again Denied Trademark For Multitouch Interface

Law360, New York (September 27, 2011, 1:12 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Friday rejected Apple Inc.'s appeal of its denial of a trademark application for the term “multitouch,” used to describe interface technology for smartphones and other devices, saying the company still hadn't demonstrated that consumers exclusively associate multitouch with its products.

The USPTO's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board said that despite Apple's repeated attempts to register multitouch, the company hadn't submitted proper evidence to demonstrate that its customers view multitouch interfaces as being distinctively within the Apple domain.
