EU Expels Competition Reference From Treaty

Law360, New York (June 22, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Sparking controversy among the members of the European Union, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has persuaded the European Commission to drop a reference to “free and undistorted competition” from the draft of a new treaty to replace the failed EU constitution.

On Friday, Sarkozy confirmed that a commitment to an “open market economy with free competition” had been eliminated from the treaty, drafted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The treaty now refers to a “social market economy aiming at full employment.”
