Sony's Potential Damages Slashed In Karaoke IP Suit

Law360, New York (October 5, 2011, 5:40 PM EDT) -- The Tennessee federal judge overseeing Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC's copyright lawsuit against several karaoke distributors ruled Wednesday that Sony may recover only one award of statutory damages per work, regardless of whether the companies distributed the allegedly infringing recordings through multiple brands.

U.S. District Judge John T. Nixon granted a motion filed by defendants JS Karaoke LLC and Inc. that claimed Sony was improperly asking for damages on a per-infringement basis and not on a per-work basis.
