Traffic Safety Watchdog Probes Mini Cooper Engine Fires

Law360, Chicago (October 17, 2011, 2:00 PM EDT) -- A federal highway safety regulator launched an investigation last week into possible engine defects in some of BMW of North America LLC's Mini Cooper S vehicles after receiving 12 complaints of engine compartment fires in the cars.

In a report posted on its website, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it opened a preliminary probe Oct. 11 to identify problems with 2007 and 2008 model year Mini Coopers that may have sparked the complaints of fire or smoke emanating from the engine compartment.
