Judge Axes $5M In Attys' Fees From Toyota Headlight Suit

Law360, New York (October 18, 2011, 4:50 PM ET) -- A California federal judge on Monday slashed an attorneys' fee request from $4.7 million to $766,000 in a settled class action claiming Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius hybrid cars came with headlights that shut off without warning.

In granting final approval of the settlement, U.S. District Judge Manuel Real reduced the plaintiffs' attorneys' fee to 20 percent of the estimated $3.8 million settlement value, saying the original request was too high, according to Michael Mallow of Loeb & Loeb LLP, an attorney for Toyota.
