Ex-Terra CEO Wants Softer Sentence In Haiti Bribes Case

Law360, New York (October 24, 2011, 1:43 PM ET) -- The former CEO of Terra Telecommunications Corp., recently convicted for his role in a scheme to bribe officials at a purportedly state-owned company in Haiti, asked a Florida judge on Saturday for a less severe prison term than the sentencing guidelines would impose.

Joel Esquenazi, who faces a Level 40 guideline recommendation of between 24 and 30 years, requested a significant downward departure or variance, contending that the guidelines are extreme and that enhancements increasing his possible prison time are unreasonable.
