Law360, New York (October 25, 2011, 3:25 PM ET) -- A Texas federal jury on Monday determined that retailer Pier 1 Imports Inc. had not infringed patent-holding company Alexsam Inc.'s intellectual property for gift card technology, but did not find that the patent claims at issue were invalid.
Alexsam claimed Pier 1 had violated U.S. Patent Numbers 6,000,608, issued in 1997; and 6,189,787, issued in 1999. Both patents describe technology associated with a multifunctional card that can serve as a debit card, prepaid phone card or loyalty card, among other uses.
