Citing Deepwater, EU Unveils Offshore Drilling Rules

Law360, New York (October 27, 2011, 4:39 PM EDT) -- The European Commission on Thursday proposed sweeping new rules for offshore oil and gas drilling in member states, contending emergency response plans and other new mandates would help avoid another disaster like the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

In its first-ever comprehensive offshore industry rules, the EC's 56-page draft rule also proposed that member states hold oil and gas companies accountable for environmental damage as well as require them to implement policies to prevent  accidents.
