6th Circ. Orders Promotion Of Black Officers In Bias Case

Law360, New York (October 28, 2011, 7:15 PM EDT) -- The Sixth Circuit on Friday ordered Memphis, Tenn., to immediately promote 28 black police officers to the rank of lieutenant in a case alleging that the city police department's promotion process was racially discriminatory.

Memphis has faced complaints since the early 1970s that its police department's employment practices violate the Civil Rights Act, according to court documents. The instant case has been pending since 2000, and is still proceeding at the district court level.
