IBM Tops Patent Ranking Again; Asian Companies Dominate List

Law360, New York (January 11, 2005, 12:00 AM EST) -- IBM retained its ranking as the number one recipient of U.S. patents in 2004, topping a list increasingly dominated by Asian high-tech companies.

For the 12th consecutive year, Big Blue won more patents than any other private sector company, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said on Tuesday. IBM was granted 3,248 patents last year, well ahead of runner-up Matsushita Electric. In 2003, IBM was granted 3,415 patents.
