UMG Can't Shake Rick James, Rob Zombie Royalties Claims

Law360, Los Angeles (November 1, 2011, 8:03 PM EDT) -- A federal judge refused Tuesday to transfer or dismiss claims from two proposed class actions against Universal Media Group brought by the estate of Rick James, artist Rob Zombie and other musicians who claim they are being stiffed out of millions in digital music royalties.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said the musicians' claims that UMG Recordings Inc. engaged in a broad scheme to underpay royalties to its artists were sufficient to allege a violation of California's Unfair Competition Law.
