$4M Arch Coal Pollution Deal OK’d As Enviros Back Down

Law360, New York (November 07, 2011, 8:07 PM ET) -- A West Virginia federal judge on Monday signed off on a $4 million settlement between Arch Coal Inc. and the government over Clean Water Act violations after three environmental groups withdrew their objections to the settlement.

The consent decree includes a $4 million civil penalty against Arch Coal, to be split between the federal government and the states of West Virginia and Kentucky. Arch must also institute a compliance management system to dramatically cut pollutant discharge levels at four of its mining operations.
