AOL Hit With $10M Verdict Over Online Filtering IP

Law360, San Diego (November 09, 2011, 3:59 PM ET) -- A New York federal jury on Friday handed down a $10 million verdict against AOL Inc., finding the company’s online parental control features infringed a patent held by Bascom Global Internet Services Inc.

In addition to awarding Bascom damages as a royalty for AOL’s infringement, the jury also held that the plaintiff’s patent, which related to filtering adult or other inappropriate content using a remote server, was valid and enforceable. However, it found that Bascom failed to show that the infringement was willful.
