DOT Fines Spirit Over Deceptive Ticket Price Ads

Law360, New York (November 21, 2011, 4:33 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation fined Spirit Airlines Inc. $50,000 on Monday for allegedly deceptive print and online advertisements that failed to provide consumers with required information about charges not included in airline tickets’ bare fare.

Spirit Airlines violated the agency’s price advertising rules as well as federal aviation laws by posting advertisements on billboards, hand-held posters and Twitter that did not properly disclose the actual amount of additional taxes and fees tacked onto the advertised fare, according to the DOT’s consent order.
