US Accuses Importer Of $1.5M Truffle Shuffle

Law360, New York (November 23, 2011, 12:01 PM EST) -- The U.S. on Wednesday sued an importer of high-end Italian truffles in the U.S. Court of International Trade, accusing the importer of fraudulently understating the value of his merchandise to get around a hefty customs tax.

MP America LLC and company president Michael Pietroiacavo deliberately misclassified more than 100 separate shipments of the fresh premium Italian mushrooms, costing the U.S. as much as $700,000 in customs revenue, the government alleges.
