Apple, Publishers Face EU E-Book Antitrust Probe

Law360, New York (December 06, 2011, 1:05 PM ET) -- The European Commission has launched a probe into whether Apple Inc. and five major publishers, including HarperCollins Publishing Inc. and Simon & Schuster Inc., have restricted competition for e-book sales, the antitrust watchdog said Tuesday.

The formal antitrust proceedings focus on whether News Corp. unit HarperCollins, CBS Corp. unit Simon & Schuster, Pearson PLC's Penguin Group, Hachette Livre SA and Macmillan Publishers owner Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck entered illegal agreements or engaged in anti-competitive practices that limited competition for e-books in the European Union.
