Alpha To Pay $209M For Deadly Massey Blast

Law360, New York (December 06, 2011, 2:07 PM ET) -- Alpha Natural Resources on Tuesday agreed to pay $209 million to absolve Massey Energy Co. of criminal liability for a blast that killed 29 miners, the same day mining officials accused Massey of flouting safety standards and hiding hazards in the mine.

Alpha, which owns Massey, will pay $1.5 million each to the families of the miners who were killed and will place $48 million in a trust for mine health and safety research, officials said. It will also pay $34.8 million in penalties and invest...
