EU Pushes To Break Up Energy Giants

Law360, New York (July 11, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Denouncing public ownership in the electricity and natural gas market as one of the primary obstacles to fair competition, the European Parliament has adopted a report aimed at promoting transparency, fairness and eco-friendliness and at toughening up national watchdogs.

The report, which the parliament backed on Tuesday, recommended phasing out regulated tariffs and lowering market entry barriers for new competitors. It also urged the European Commission to put more effort into undoing market concentration in order to attack the possible abuse of market dominance.
