Judges Clear Massey's $35M Deal To End Coal Slurry Fight

Law360, New York (December 09, 2011, 9:24 PM ET) -- Despite a leak of settlement details, a mass litigation panel gave their blessing Wednesday to a $35 million settlement between Massey Energy Co. and hundreds of West Virginia residents who claimed the company had tainted groundwater with coal slurry.

Bruce Stanley of Reed Smith LLP, who represents the plaintiffs, confirmed Friday that the settlement had won court approval even though the Associated Press published the settlement amount in August after seeing a private letter sent to the plaintiffs.
