FTC Probes Carrier IQ Over Cellphone Data Tracking

Law360, New York (December 14, 2011, 8:07 PM EST) -- The Federal Trade Commission is investigating claims that software made by developer Carrier IQ Inc. secretly collected smartphone users’ personal data and sent it to cellphone providers without users’ knowledge, according to news reports Wednesday.

Citing anonymous officials, the Washington Post said the FTC was conducting a private inquiry into allegations involving Carrier IQ’s software, which comes preinstalled on some 150 million smartphones, including Android and BlackBerry devices.
