Utility Charged Bogus Disconnect Fees: Wash. Regulators

Law360, New York (December 15, 2011, 3:28 PM EST) -- Washington state regulators on Wednesday lodged a complaint against Puget Sound Energy Inc. accusing the gas and electric company of violating consumer protection laws by charging customers a disconnect fee even when not disconnecting their service.

The complaint, filed by staff for the state Utilities and Transportation Commission, said state law allows electric and gas utilities to charge a disconnect fee for a visit only if the utility actually disconnects a customer's service.
