Canada Blasts Russian Plan To Slash Seal Pelt Trade

Law360, New York (December 22, 2011, 5:55 PM EST) -- Canadian trade officials on Thursday criticized a recent plan from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan to ban the import of harp seal skins, a move that would close off the largest market for Canadian seal pelt exports.

Canada, which is already fighting a similar European Union ban at the World Trade Organization, warned it was still committed to defending its sealing industry in the face of the three-country custom union's plans to restrict imports.
