Nuclear Lab Faces $3.3M Fine Over Security Breach

Law360, New York (July 16, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The University of California, owner of the Los Alamos nuclear weapons lab, may be facing a fine of $3.3 million from the Department of Energy, after the regulatory agency found classified documents from the facility in a completely unrelated trailer-park drug raid.

An investigation by the department's National Nuclear Security Administration found that safety procedures implemented by the University of California were so lax that an employee was able to leave the Los Alamos facility with classified documents, both digitally stored on a USB thumb drive...
