Supreme Court Weighs Texas Redistricting Dispute

Law360, New York (January 9, 2012, 10:56 PM EST) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday heard oral arguments in a dispute over congressional and state legislature district maps drawn by the Texas legislature, which critics say are engineered to dilute minority voting strength, and competing maps drawn by a federal court.

After a District of Columbia court refused to approve the legislature's redistricting plan, the Western District of Texas redrew the maps for both congressional and state legislature seats and issued an order in November implementing its maps, prompting the current appeal.
