Pfizer Seeks To Merge 59 Zoloft Birth Defect Suits

Law360, New York (January 19, 2012, 4:29 PM ET) -- Pfizer Inc. asked the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Wednesday to centralize 59 lawsuits pending in seven federal courts that claim the drugmaker failed to adequately warn pregnant users of Zoloft that the antidepressant could cause birth defects.

The lawsuits allege that the drug setraline — which Pfizer markets as Zoloft — directly caused potentially fatal birth defects, and accuse Pfizer of willfully failing to warn doctors and patients of the dangers involved.
