China Defends Raw Export Policy After WTO Ruling

Law360, Los Angeles (February 1, 2012, 6:45 PM EST) -- China's Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday defended its policy placing export restrictions on industrial raw materials after a ruling by a World Trade Organization appeals panel earlier this week that the restrictions violate the trade group's rules.

Commerce officials maintained that its trade policies are needed to meet the country's environmental and conservation goals, according to a statement. WTO rules “not only focus on trade liberalization,” but also allow members to protect their resources and protect the environment, China said.
