Health Insurers Slam HHS Rule To Simplify Policy Explanations

Law360, New York (February 9, 2012, 8:11 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday finalized a requirement that private health insurers provide consumers with uniform, plain-English explanations of their policies, provoking an immediate outcry from insurers who said the rule was too burdensome.

The rule, which will go into effect in late September, requires insurers to create summaries of benefits and coverage based on a template and to include uniform glossaries of insurance terms, such as "co-insurance" and "deductible," with policy information.
