EU Antitrust Chief Vows To Stamp Out Patent Abuse

Law360, New York (February 10, 2012, 3:28 PM ET) -- The European Union's antitrust chief vowed Friday to keep companies from hindering competition by abusing their patents, emphasizing the particular importance of ensuring that competitors have a fair shot at licensing protected inventions incorporated into industry standards.

Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia didn't cite any particular companies that he was worried might be taking unfair advantage of so-called standard-essential patents, but his comments came less than two weeks after the European Commission opened a probe into Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.'s patent litigation strategy over wireless technology....
