Ill. Official Faces Tax Charges Over Misused Campaign Funds

Law360, New York (February 23, 2012, 10:34 PM EST) -- An Illinois official was indicted Thursday for allegedly underreporting his income and underpaying taxes on more than $225,000 in campaign funds that prosecutors said he used for personal expenses including gambling.

Cook County Commissioner William Beavers, 77, was charged with one count of attempting to obstruct the Internal Revenue Service and three counts of filing false federal income tax returns, after allegedly drawing funds from three campaign accounts from 2006 to 2008, according to an indictment filed in Illinois federal court.
