Calif. Creates Criminal Unit To Enforce Wage Theft Act

Law360, San Diego (February 28, 2012, 9:02 PM EST) -- More than a month after the Wage Theft Prevention Act took effect in California, a division of the state’s Department of Industrial Relations said Monday it is forming a criminal investigation unit to target employers that perpetrate wage theft and engage in other illegal activities.

California Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su said the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement unit seeks to address flagrant mistreatment of workers and aims to level the playing field for employers in the state by raising the stakes for those who underpay,...
