Doctors Bash Plan To Fight Rx Abuse By Denying Claims

Law360, New York (March 5, 2012, 7:56 PM EST) -- A proposal to fight prescription drug abuse by allowing Medicare Part D insurers to deny coverage to suspected abusers could cut patients off from medicine they legitimately need, doctors told the nation's Medicare agency Friday.

Under the proposed policy, Part D insurers could refuse coverage if they identified a beneficiary as a “bona fide safety concern” and made “reasonable efforts” to contact both the beneficiary and the prescribing doctor to find out whether a prescription was medically necessary.
