Lawmaker Urges Expansion Of Nuke Plant Evacuation Radius

Law360, New York (March 14, 2012, 1:43 PM EDT) -- A U.S. lawmaker on Wednesday criticized the federal agency tasked with making sure the Indian Point reactors above New York City are safe, urging the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to force communities within 50 miles of nuclear plants to come up with evacuation plans.

Current regulations require evacuation planning only for areas located within a 10-mile radius, Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., said in a letter to NRC chairman Gregory B. Jaczko, which means the rules don't cover 17 million people in parts of New Jersey, Connecticut...
