Nestle, Mars, Colgate Face €35M French Antitrust Fine

Law360, New York (March 20, 2012, 2:47 PM EDT) -- France’s competition authority fined Nestle Purina Petcare France SAS, Mars Inc.-owned Royal Canin SAS and Colgate Palmolive Co.’s pet food unit €35.3 million ($46.7 million) on Tuesday for anti-competitive distribution practices relating to the companies’ dog and cat food products.

The Autorite de la Concurrence found that from 2004 to 2008, the three pet food producers restricted competition in the premium dry dog and cat food market, in violation of competition provisions of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
