New Safety Worries Spark FDA Scrutiny Of Metal Hip Implants

Law360, New York (March 29, 2012, 3:13 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will seek scientific and clinical advice as it considers more rigorous testing and review requirements for metal-on-metal hip replacement systems, the agency announced Thursday.

Recent data noting an increased failure rate for certain metal-on-metal hip systems have added to existing safety concerns, the FDA said, leading the agency to call a two-day expert advisory panel meeting for June 27-28 to discuss failure rates and modes, local and systematic complications, and patient risk factors, among other topics.
