EPA Proposes Rule Restricting New PBDE Chemical Imports

Law360, New York (March 30, 2012, 7:32 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a proposed rule tightening import restrictions for chemical compounds commonly used in electronics, plastics, textiles and other projects over concerns the chemicals may be toxic to both humans and wildlife, the agency announced Friday.

The rule would require any importer of six specific polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) for a significant new use to notify the EPA at least 90 days in advance, allowing the agency to review and possibly restrict or prohibit their use, starting in 2014. The agency said...
