EU Launches 2 Antitrust Probes Into Motorola Over Patents

Law360, New York (April 03, 2012, 12:36 PM ET) -- The European Union’s antitrust regulator on Tuesday opened a pair of formal investigations into Motorola Mobility Inc. to find whether the company disrupted competition in the EU market with its patents that help smartphones, tablets and other products follow industry standards.

The European Commission opened the twin probes after receiving complaints from Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp. over standard-essential patents for smartphones and other devices. Apple and Microsoft claim the patents are not being made available in a fair manner.
