DOT Creates National Registry For Truck Drivers' Doctors

Law360, New York (April 19, 2012, 2:55 PM EDT) -- Acting on decade-old recommendations, the U.S. Department of Transportation said Wednesday it will mandate testing and registration of medical examiners who screen the health of interstate truck and bus drivers.

About 3 million examinations are conducted each year on the nation's commercial vehicle drivers, and it is essential that physicians performing evaluations understand the "specific physical qualifications that affect a driver's ability to safely operate the vehicle," agency officials said.
