USTR Says New Investment Treaty Model Boosts Protections

Law360, New York (April 20, 2012, 5:32 PM EDT) -- The U.S. government on Friday released an updated model used for generating bilateral investment treaties with foreign countries such as China and India that included expanded labor and environmental protections, putting an end to a temporary suspension of new U.S. investment agreements. 

The U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Department of State said they had concluded a three-year review of the previous 2004 model bilateral investment treaty, which was requested by the Obama administration in 2009.
