BOEM Considers First Offshore Hydrokinetic Power Lease

Law360, New York (April 24, 2012, 7:34 PM ET) -- The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has received its first-ever lease application for a hydrokinetic power testing area, and is seeking public comments on the potential environmental impact of testing the new technology off the coast of Florida, the bureau said Tuesday.

Florida Atlantic University proposed a 17,080-acre lease located nine to 15 nautical miles offshore from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., seeking to deploy and test various experimental turbines in an effort to generate energy from the force of ocean currents, BOEM said.
